Also, I’ve seen my fair share of anime, and I’m a member of the generation that is old enough to have seen most of the works Napier discusses in Anime. The first chapter of the book (appropriately titled “Why Anime?”) explains why Japanese animation is amazing and exciting and well worth academic attention, and I feel like it conveys a great deal of appreciation and respect for the medium. My experience of reading the book was completely the opposite of the bad rumors I had heard. I didn’t have a particularly strong impression from the chapters on magical girls from the original 2001 edition that I had read as a freshman in college (probably because I was eighteen years old), and several people had said that the book is poorly written, gets plot points wrong, and doesn’t respect anime as a medium. If I had to guess, it probably had something to do with the bad reputation the book had (has?) among anime fans. I had taken a lot from Napier’s two earlier books on literature ( Escape from the Wasteland and The Fantastic in Modern Japanese Literature) as an undergraduate, so I’m not sure why it took me so long to sit down and starting reading Anime. For whatever reason, however, I read the 2005 updated edition of Susan Napier’s book on anime during my first winter break and was so inspired that I decided to start writing about popular media, too. This is something I wouldn’t have dreamed that I’d be doing when I first entered graduate school. Title: Anime from Akira to Howl’s Moving Castle: Experiencing Contemporary Japanese AnimationĪlthough I consider myself a literature person, it might be better to call what I do “media studies.” I write papers about books, but I also write more than a few papers about movies, and at least half of the Japanese movies I watch and write about these days are animated.

Anime from Akira to Howl's Moving Castle by Susan J. Napier

He makes deals with the devil and encourages evil in others.”Perfect reputation for a man capable of being King of the Pirates. He’s traveled every inch of the sea, fought off all manner of sea demons, including a shark, which he fought underwater with his bare hands. He’s said to be able to take on twenty men at once in battle. It promises for more adventure and who does not like an adventure novel where there is a search for treasure! The crew of the Night Farer were written as mostly scoundrels and there were a couple of characters that were downright terrible. The reputation of the Pirate King:“I’ve heard rumors of Kalligan’s dangerous deeds. It kept me on my toes wondering what she was going to pull next.I enjoyed the plot of her being on a secret mission and allowing herself to be caught by the crew of the Night Farer in order to obtain an ancient map. I enjoyed knowing that there was more to the story than she was displaying to the crew. Her character kept me entertained from start to finish. She is sassy, intelligent, and ruthless when it was required. It is the piece that is held by the Jeskor line that Alosa is currently searching for. What I loved: Alosa as a female pirate captain was enjoyable. The pieces had been handed down from father to son for many generations. The map was once whole but then it was separated into three pieces and given to each one of the three ancient pirates. This is an island heaped with unimaginable treasure that is guarded by magical creatures. Turns out I had nothing to worry about and it was lovely! In this world, there are three ancient pirate lines and once a long time ago they had a map that showed the way to the legendary Isla de Canta. I wasn’t sure how believable her character at seventeen was going to come across as a pirate captain. My reason for being unsure was whether or not I was going to like this story due to the age of Alosa. I love anything pirates and bonus, female pirate protagonist, yep a must read. Daughter of the Pirate King was a book I knew I had to read.
